Automation just means having software handle a repetitive task for you - moving data between systems, sending follow-ups, generating reports - reliably and without manual effort. Plenty of high-value automation needs no AI at all; it's just well-built logic.

AI comes in when a task needs judgment, language, or pattern recognition - reading messy documents, drafting replies, deciding from context. We use AI where it genuinely adds value, not just because it's trendy.

What is an AI agent?

"AI agent" gets attached to almost anything these days, but it has a real meaning. The clearest way to see it is as a spectrum - from systems that just answer you, up to ones that genuinely act on their own:

Chat: You ask, it answers. It can talk things through with you, but it can't take action on its own - no tools, no reaching into your systems. Like a knowledgeable advisor who can tell you what to do, but can't do it for you. (Think ChatGPT or Claude.ai.) AI built into an app: Software uses AI for one specific step you designed. It follows your rules and decides nothing on its own - like a vending machine: press the button, get the result. Most "AI features" are this. A tool-using assistant: You give it a goal and some tools, and it figures out which to use to get there, within limits you set. Like a personal shopper with your list and a store map - they pick the route, but you sent them. A true agent: You hand it a goal and it plans the steps, does the work, checks itself, and tells you when it's done - without you steering each step. Like hiring a contractor and handing over the blueprint.

A true "AI agent" is that top rung - you hand it a goal and it decides the steps itself. The simple test for anything calling itself an agent: can it decide to do something you didn't explicitly tell it to? If no, it's automation - useful, but not an agent. If yes, it's an agent - and the more it decides on its own, the more carefully we lock down what it's allowed to touch (least privilege, human sign-off on anything irreversible). That discipline is built into how we work.

Secure by design: When we build an application, the code is written to be secure from the start, not patched up afterward. A review that cross-checks itself: Every code change runs through an automated security review before it ships - and it isn't just one tool's opinion. Three independent systems across two separate vendors cross-check each other, so anything one misses, another catches. Backed by real-world experience: Two different things matter here: the code itself, and how the whole system is put together. The automated review handles the code; over 14 years of senior IT consulting handles the architecture - so the building blocks are sound by design, not just scanned at the end. Agents stay inside their boundaries: For AI agents, safety is about limits: each agent gets access to only what its task needs, and anything irreversible (deletes, sends, payments, deploys) waits for a human's sign-off. Tested before it goes live: For applications - and workflows where it fits - we set up a development environment alongside production, so changes are proven safe before they ever touch your live system.
